If God Knows, Why Does He Ask?
June 15, 2015
8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and they hid themselves from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 So the Lord God called out to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”
10 And he said, “I heard You in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.”
11 Then He asked, “Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”
12 Then the man replied, “The woman You gave to be with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate.”
13 So the Lord God asked the woman, “What is this you have done?”
And the woman said, “It was the serpent. He deceived me, and I ate.”
If God knows everything, why does He ask questions? If God knew where Adam was, why did He ask? If God knew who/what told Adam he was naked, why did He ask? If God knew Adam and Eve ate from the forbidden tree, why did He ask them if they did?
It seems like God is playing a cruel game. It's like He's the sovereign "It" in a game of cosmic "Hide-In-Go-Seek."
Is this how God acts when His children disobey Him?
Yes. . . and No.
Yes - He does do exactly what we read Him doing in Genesis 3:8-13. But - No - He's not playing a cruel game.
You see - God does know everything. He knows the answers to the questions He is asking. He asks them because He wants Adam and Eve to know He knows the answers to the questions He is asking.
We all long to be fully loved and fully known. We want to be loved unconditionally "warts and all." Adam and Eve could not possibly believe they could still be truly loved by God . . . unless they understood they were also fully known by God. Had God left them in hiding, they would have never known unconditional love. It was only when they were "exposed" as sinners in God's sight that they could then begin to comprehend the magnitude of His love.
It's like this: If you only want to feel partly loved by God, try to hide from Him. But if you want to know and experience the depth of His full love for you, "come out" and agree with Him about your sin. THEN, in His total and complete love for you will you begin to be the human He made you to be. It's only when you understand you are known fully that you can begin to understand His full love for you. He doesn't love the Facebook version of you. He loves YOU.
Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy. Proverbs 28:13
If God is pursuing you right now - it's for a purpose. A purpose of you understanding His love like never before. Surrender. Answer His questions. Agree with Him about your sin. Don't give Him the Instragram version. Let Him have YOU. Then let His grace - the grace that He has already demonstrated by sending His Son Jesus - overwhelm you again and again.
He's not coming with a whip with thunder and lightning. That's already been taken care of. His Son was whipped in your place. He comes in a gentle breeze. Why? Because He loves YOU.
