1 Therefore, no condemnation now exists for those in Christ Jesus, 2 because the Spirit’s law of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3 What the law could not do since it was limited by the flesh, God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending His own Son in flesh like ours under sin’s domain, and as a sin offering, 4 in order that the law’s requirement would be accomplished in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh think about the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, about the things of the Spirit. 6 For the mind-set of the flesh is death, but the mind-set of the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind-set of the flesh is hostile to God because it does not submit itself to God’s law, for it is unable to do so. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God lives in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 Now if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then He who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through His Spirit who lives in you. — Romans 8:1-11
Life Through the Spirit
by Tiffany Atkinson
Are you addicted to anything? One of my friends heard the Lord say to her, “I want you to crave Me like you crave caffeine.” He wants all of our hearts, souls, and minds…
Romans 8:6 "The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace."
For years, I yearned for a passionate relationship with Jesus—an addictive type relationship. I saw a few people in my life who adored Him the way I wanted to. I would have Him on my mind in a "I need to spend time with the King when I can" kind of mentality, and then the day would slip away. I cancelled on Him all the time. I can only imagine how few friends I would have if I as consistently cancelled on them. I realized I needed to stop doing this to Him.
I needed peace in my life. I was striving and in a hurry all the time, working for the Lord, but doing so to the point of exhaustion. Through a blessed series of events, Jesus made it clear that He desired some real time with me. So I asked our Father for forgiveness for cancelling on Christ all the time.
Guess what?! The minute I repented of my busyness and literally gave my schedule over to God, He began to fill it with His agenda and people. Even better, He gave me a brand-new rebirth and relationship with the Holy Spirit! (Romans 8:11). I did not even realize what I had been missing out on or how REAL the Spirit is when we live life with Him!
For the last couple years I have burned for time with the Trinity—all of them. And yes, I schedule Jesus in. The command is to love the Lord God with ALL our hearts, souls, and minds (Matthew 22:37). We give Him this, and He returns to us the most incredible joy, peace, and love (Romans 8:38).
Living life through a true, authentic, and faithful relationship with the Holy Spirit is the only way to truly live. He brings color to a dark world and makes even the mundane really fun. The best news is that the Holy Spirit never cancels on us. He will show up! Just give Him your time, show up for your scheduled meetings with Jesus, and then love Him with all your heart, soul, and mind. It becomes super easy…almost addictive!
- I encourage you to not stop your time with the Lord right now. Go to Romans 8 and slowly dive into it…sentence by sentence! It’s chock full of incredible advice!
- What does your schedule look like next week? Can you give the Lord an extra few hours (with a friendly warning that 3-4 hours might not be enough time)?
