Help! I Just Read 1 John 5! Now What?

Sunday was Part 2 in a 6 week series through 1 John called "Love As Our Witness." Both weeks I have encouraged and challenged The Church at West Franklin to read through 1 John every week of the series. If you do this, you will have read through the book of 1 John 6 times!!!!

This week, I would like to give you a pointer or two from each of the 5 chapters to help you better apply this book to your life as you read.

You may have read 1 John 5 today. Now you may be thinking, "Now What?"

I recommend taking a verse (or a passage) that "stuck out" to you, ask questions of the verse (passage) itself, and then questions that are personal to you.

Consider 1 John 5:1-5

1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Messiah has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of Him. 2 This is how we know that we love God’s children when we love God and obey His commands. 3 For this is what love for God is: to keep His commands. Now His commands are not a burden, 4 because whatever has been born of God conquers the world. This is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith. 5 And who is the one who conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Using this passage, ask/commit to the following:

a.What are the two realities that result from being born of God?

b. How can we know we have love in our hearts according to verse 2?

c. How is it that God's commands are not a burden? Do you see obeying God as a burden?

d. How does the believer conquer the world?

e. What is the believer's faith to be in - over and over, time and time again?

f. According to these verses, how sure of you of your salvation? Why or why not?

That's it! Do that for yourself with 1 John 5:1-5, or pick out a verse that grabs your attention and ask similar questions. Developing this habit in 1 John will not only enrich our souls; but will also help cultivate a lifestyle of daily reading AND applying of the Scriptures.
